We’re thrilled to introduce Dr Kate Thomas, our new Superintendant Veterinarian taking over from Dr Jodie Wakeman. With over a decade of experience in animal care, Dr Kate brings a powerful mix of compassion, clinical expertise, and a deep commitment to conservation.
Since joining us in September 2024, Dr Kate has been making an incredible impact.
A Special Focus on Conservation and Care
Dr Kate has a special interest in renal disease, palliative care, and wildlife surgery, and is passionate about educating the public and our volunteers on koala health and conservation.
Her work at Friends of the Koala is backed by years of hands-on experience in small animal practice, most recently also serving as Acting Practice Manager at VetLove Goonellabah. Before that, she worked in mixed animal practice at Ourimbah Vet Hospital and began her veterinary journey as a nurse, so she truly understands every level of animal care.

We’re lucky to have her wisdom, warmth, and surgical skills supporting our mission to protect and care for koalas in the Northern Rivers region.
Welcome to the team, Dr Kate!
