Love for the Koala: Rehabilitation & Education Upgrade Project

We are constructing three new runs joeys and resident koalas

At Friends of the Koala, we are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, release and conservation of one of Australia’s most beloved native species – the koala. With the support of generous donors like you, we are embarking on an exciting new initiative: The Love for the Koala: Rehabilitation & Education Upgrade Project. This project aims to enhance our facilities, improve koala rehabilitation, and expand our educational outreach.

Creating an Accessible and Inclusive Learning Experience

Education plays a crucial role in conservation. To make our efforts more inclusive, we are constructing an accessible, disability-inclusive walkway through the Friends of the Koala property. This new feature will allow visitors of all abilities to engage in guided educational tours, learning firsthand about koala conservation and the importance of habitat protection.

Improving Rehabilitation Facilities for Koalas

To provide the best care for our rescued koalas, we are enhancing our rehabilitation infrastructure with several key upgrades:

  • New Joey & Resident Koala Runs: We are constructing three new runs at the top of the facility specifically for our joeys and resident koalas, along with a tall holding area for release preparation to help prepare them for a return to the wild.
  • Separation Wall for Koala Areas: A new wall will divide the residential koalas from the wild koalas in rehabilitation, creating a safer and more controlled environment. This separation will not only improve care for the koalas but also allow us to conduct educational tours and apply for a license to charge a fee, helping to sustain our conservation efforts.
  • Concreting of Upper & Lower Sections: We are laying concrete in four holding areas in the upper section, as well as all holdings and walkways in the lower rehabilitation area. This will improve hygiene, safety, and overall facility maintenance, ensuring a better environment for both the koalas and our volunteers.
  • Shade Sails – Help Us Protect Koalas’ Food Source: We are installing a shade sail that will safeguard the fresh leaves that our dedicated ‘leafers’ cut every morning. Without protection, the leaves wilt in the sun, making them unappetizing for the koalas.
