Koala Kindy & Care Centre October 2024

Brown Sugar(6)

It’s this time of month again where we update you on our Koala Kindy and Care Centre patients this month. We have some newbies to introduce you to, some exciting releases and progress updates!

June through December is a busy, dangerous and also a crucial time for koalas. Male koalas are searching for a mate whilst young dispersing koalas are off to find new territory. These expeditions force koalas to cross busy roads and motorways which can often result in car collisions – many of which are fatal.

Currently the most effective way for members of the public to avoid car hits is to slow down, watch out for koalas, look out for signs, be aware of koala hotspots and if a collision occurs, phone our 24/7 rescue hotline immediately – even if the odds don’t look good, we still might have a chance of saving the koala or a pouch young joey.

Many of the koalas who have been admitted to our Koala Hospital recently have been hit by a car – it is a very busy time here but it is what we do. Some of the photos below might be confronting, if you think they might be too much, please don’t continue reading – we know it’s very upsetting to see injured koalas – we also sometimes want to show their reality.

But let us first start with the good news…the releases!

Billy Buttons and Sir Franklin

We are delighted to advise that Billy Buttons, Lamington and Sir Franklin have all been released been released following treatment and rehabilitation – Billy Buttons for a severe tooth infection, Lamington for chlamydial conjunctivitis and Sir Franklin for a suspected car hit with mild eye trauma as well as chlamydia conjunctivitis.

Brown Sugar

Our gorgeous little Brown Sugar has headed off to soft release – yay! Brown Sugar who arrived late last year, weighing around 1kg is finally ready for her own wild adventures. Aw what a beautiful success story for this girl!

Hobi

Hobi has been moved in with Charlotte, Ivy and Polar Star for some socialisation and they are all getting along with Charlotte is showing a particular interest in him – that mothering instinct is back! Hobi seems to be enjoying the extra space and is very active – cuteness overload!

Sitting in the sunshine together – two new friends!

Valery and Baby Cakes

Valery still has a very bad tongue ulcer and is undergoing treatment, she is getting all the love from her carers and will hopefully be on the mend in no time. Her little joey Baby Cakes is doing well and continues to gain weight and explore her new surroundings.

Blossom

Blossom is recovering well from her operation and has been moved to a larger run to practice climbing the bigger trees with her injured leg. She is adapting really well and the vet team are happy with her progress.

Beautiful Blossom

Gasket

Gasket’s head injury and neurological issues seem to have resolved and we are hopeful that he can be released very soon! Super stuff Gasket – we love this news!

Handsome Gasket

Dorothy

We have a new girl on the block – Dorothy who was admitted with chlamydial conjunctivitis and was also very anaemic. She has been started on treatment and supplements for her anaemia and will hopefully be ready for antibiotics any day now.

Genie

Another new boy is Genie who was admitted for chlamydial conjunctivitis and is receiving treatment and lots of TLC from our carers – he is in the best hands!

Genie approves of the leaf!

Bunja

Bunja is another new male patient who was admitted following a car hit and has sustained serious trauma to his eye as well as abdominal bleeding. He is in our ICU in hospital and is receiving pain relief. Please send this handsome boy all of your positive vibes for recovery.

Poor Bunja – we are taking care of him

Shae and Soul

Shae and Soul are our most recent mum and joey dyad who were admitted recently following a car hit. Shae sustained serious internal injuries and has undergone surgery. She is recovering well but has a long road of rehabilitation ahead of her. Soul luckily didn’t sustain any injuries and is doing well. Poor Shae, these casualties are just crushing for our team – not to mention the ones who didn’t make the collisions.

And Shae and Soul – we will help them give it their best shot

Charlotte, Ivy and Polar Star

The girls are all tickety-boo and say hi to their fanbase! They also say thanks for all the love!
