Koala Kindy & Care Centre August 2024

Each year Friends of the Koala rescues over 350 sick, injured and orphaned koalas.

We are well into koala breeding season and our volunteers and veterinary team are busy doing an exceptional job of providing the best care, treatment and medicine available in our our Northern Rivers Koala Hospital, Koala Kindy and Koala Care Centre.

We have a number of exciting updates to share with you this month so let’s not waste any time!

Droplet

We are thrilled to say that Droplet has finally been released – yay!

You may remember that Droplet was admitted to our Koala Hospital back in March when he was separated from his mum. Droplet was initially treated for injuries associated with a tree fall, his condition improved quickly and he joined the other kindy kids in our Koala Kindy and Care Centre. He had a brief set-back with a minor yeast infection, however recovered quickly and headed out to soft release at the beginning of August. His gate was opened a week later and he headed off on his wildlife adventures. Good luck little guy – and stay safe!

While in care, koalas are monitored daily and receive specialised veterinary treatment and koala care from our volunteers.

Sparrow

Sparrow, who was admitted with conjunctivitis and cystitis recovered really well and we are delighted to say has been released. He was very excited to get back out into the wild and will hopefully live a long healthy life with no need to ever visit us again!

Sky

Sky sadly had an encounter with multiple dogs resulting in a puncture wound to her hand requiring sutures as well as other minor puncture wounds to her body and mouth. She is one very lucky girl who healed well with no infection and has been released!!

Hobi

Little Hobi is doing well and is currently king of Koala Kindy on his own solo mission. He is doing well and gaining weight!

Brown Sugar

We are hopeful that Brown Sugar will be ready for soft release soon, she is tracking along and seems generally unphased by life in our Koala Kindy and Care Centre. Fingers crossed she gets the green light soon.

Look at that gorgeous face – we love you Brown Sugar!!

Momo

This beautiful girl with the cutest face was admitted to our Koala Hospital in early June following a car hit. Momo’s right hip was dislocated from the impact of the collision and following cage rest to allow her hip to heal, she is now out in a big enclosure practicing climbing and moving about. She has made an impressive recovery and will be ready for soft release imminently!

Gasket

Gasket a male koala was also hit by a car and sustained injuries to his head. He has some neurological abnormalities as a result and his head is tilted to the side. Gasket has progressed well from ICU to the outdoor wards and we are hopeful that he will continue to improve. Fingers crossed for this gorgeous boy.

Athena and Thor

Athena and Thor (mum and joey) were rescued from a wire fence. Athena sustained minor injuries to her legs but both mum and bub also tested positive for Chlamydia. Thor’s eyes had become very crusty but have since improved with treatment. Whilst Thor’s treatment has finished, Athena is still undergoing treatment for Chlamydia-related cystitis. They are just adorable, Thor’s fur is so long and fluffy!

Billy Buttons

Thanks to the keen eye of a member of the public, Billy Buttons was rescued and brought to our Koala Hospital with suspected Chlamydia-related conjunctivitis. Billy Buttons was found to have a rotten tooth, which appeared to be affecting his nasal passage and eye. Whilst he tested negative for chlamydia he has begun antibiotics for the infection in his mouth and will hopefully be feeling much better very soon.

We also have Hellen admitted with cystitis and Peasley admitted with conjunctivitis.

Ivy, Charlotte an Polar Star

Let’s not forget the regular golden girls Ivy, Charlotte and Polar Star who are all tickety boo, getting alone well and loving the koala life.

As always, we rely on the public’s generosity to help us rescue, treat and release over 350 koalas each year. We need to raise $500,000 per annum to cover the annual operating expenses and keep the doors of the only Koala Hospital in the Northern Rivers open.

Our Koala Hospital services are free to the community, but it costs an average of $5,000 to rehabilitate and release a koala. You can help us provide quality treatment and care to koalas by becoming a Friend of the Northern Rivers Koala Hospital.

Any donation no matter how small or large is greatly appreciated. If you would like to support our work, you might like to do so in the following ways:
