Help save koalas in crisis after Cyclone Alfred!

Milly

Save our koalas, protect, rescue and restore!

Many of you will be aware of our most recent setback for koalas – the extreme weather event that was Cyclone Alfred and it’s devastating impact on all people, housing, all wildlife including koalas. Already facing habitat destruction and the challenges of climate change, our iconic koalas are in a constant state of crisis.

Friends of the Koala are working tirelessly to find, treat, and shelter injured koalas who got caught up in the cyclone — many of which are suffering from multiple issues like trauma, disease and malnutrition which have been compounded by Cyclone Alfred.

In response to the cyclone, our Emergency Coordinators have identified and prioritised key areas for reconnaissance, search, assessment, and rescue efforts. These efforts are concentrated on regions with high koala populations, areas most affected, locations where koalas have already been rescued, and sites where koalas are still present.

We can’t go it alone, we need help and support. There are countless ways to make a difference and help protect our beloved Aussie icon.

Koalas we know are endangered and at risk of extinction, they face multiple challenges, exacerbated by the impacts of climate change, leading to more intense and more frequent extreme weather events including bushfires, flooding, droughts and the recent cyclone. These events have a profoundly negative impact on koalas and their habitat. Koalas have endured so much, and now, they need us more than ever.
