As we celebrate the International Year of Volunteers throughout 2026, it’s the perfect time to recognise the incredible contribution of volunteers and the vital role they play in wildlife conservation.
At Friends of the Koala, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do, from rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing koalas across the Northern Rivers. We are deeply grateful to our dedicated volunteer community, whose compassion and commitment make this work possible every single day.
If you’ve ever thought about volunteering with wildlife or supporting koala conservation in the Northern Rivers, now is a great time to get involved. Right now, we are recruiting for several important volunteer roles, and each one plays a vital part in supporting koalas in care.

3 Ways to Volunteer for Koalas in the Northern Rivers
Volunteer as a Leaf Harvester
Leaf Harvesters collect fresh eucalyptus leaves, a critical food source for koalas in care.
This is a simple but essential volunteer role that directly supports the health and recovery of koalas in rehabilitation. By helping supply their daily nutrition, Leaf Harvesters make a real, hands-on impact on koala care.

Volunteer as a Koala Carer
Koala Carers provide hands-on support for koalas during rehabilitation. This role is ideal for people who want to make a direct difference to the care and recovery of injured, sick and orphaned koalas. Koala Carers are part of the compassionate, skilled volunteer network that helps give koalas a second chance to return to the wild.

Volunteer as a Hotline Responder
Hotline Responders are often the first point of contact for members of the public reporting koalas in need. This role helps ensure calls for help are answered and that koalas in need can be identified and supported as quickly as possible. For anyone wanting to contribute to koala rescue in a practical and important way, this is a valuable way to help. Importantly, is role can be done remotely at home.

Why volunteering matters
Volunteering with Friends of the Koala supports every stage of the koala rescue, rehabilitation and release process in the Northern Rivers.
Beyond the direct impact on wildlife, volunteering is also a deeply rewarding experience, offering connection, purpose, and the opportunity to be part of a passionate, like-minded community.
During International Volunteer Week, we extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our volunteers. Your time, care and dedication truly make a difference.
