Friends of the Koala is deeply saddened by the recent events in Budj Bim National Park, where bushfire-impacted koalas were euthanised through aerial shooting. This tragic situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive, humane, and transparent strategies to address the welfare of koalas facing habitat loss and environmental stressors.
We echo IFAW’s call for an immediate parliamentary inquiry into the ecological and animal welfare emergency unfolding in southwest Victoria. The long-standing issues of habitat destruction, particularly due to the expansion of blue gum plantations, have led to a crisis point where koalas are left without adequate food and shelter. The lack of sustainable habitat management has resulted in dire consequences for these iconic animals.
As the leading koala conservation group in Australia – and the only organisation globally dedicated to all aspects of koala conservation – Friends of the Koala witnesses firsthand the impact of environmental pressures on this iconic species. Based in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, we rescue, treat, rehabilitate and release koalas, protect and enhance habitat, initiate and execute koala health research projects, engage and educate the community and advocate on behalf of koalas at a local, state and national level. We also work closely with Traditional Custodians, researchers, landholders, and government.
We believe that all wildlife management decisions must prioritise animal welfare, be grounded in independent science, and respect the knowledge and leadership of Traditional Custodians. Humane, evidence-based, and transparent action is not optional – it is essential.
We urge governments, stakeholders, and the public to act decisively to protect the future of Australia’s koalas.
