We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Hon. Lifetime Member Monica Pimm, a true pioneer of koala conservation in the Northern Rivers.
Alongside her husband, Trevor, Monica was instrumental in the establishment of Friends of the Koala in the mid-1980s. Their dedication and early development work laid the foundation for the organisation’s holistic conservation mission that continues to guide us today.
Monica was a fierce advocate for habitat protection and recovery. She kept a close eye on development applications impacting koala habitat in East Lismore and the Northern Ridges of Goonellabah – areas once home to a significant koala population before subdivision. Her voice and vigilance helped ensure that the protection of habitat remained central to our purpose.
She also carefully documented the group’s early tree plantings up to the end of 1990, and her scrapbook remains an invaluable part of Friends of the Koala’s historical archive.
Even in later years, Monica maintained her deep interest in koala conservation and stayed connected with the organisation, attending celebrations and reunions with her characteristic warmth and enthusiasm. She was in her ninety-fourth year.
Monica’s legacy lives on in the trees planted, the habitats protected, and the enduring spirit of community care that she helped to build. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who were inspired by her lifelong commitment to koalas.
A Celebration of Monica’s Life is to be held on Friday 31st October 10am at Rochdale Theatre Goonellabah.
