KOALAS ARE ENDANGERED AND FACE THE THREAT OF EXTINCTION
They need our collective help to survive.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps us achieve our mission of protecting these beloved animals.
Our Koala Hospital services are free to the community, but it costs an average of $5,000 to rehabilitate and release a koala. You can help us provide quality treatment and care to koalas by becoming a Friend of the Northern Rivers Koala Hospital.
Help us rescue and treat over 350 koalas each year
We need to raise $500,000 per annum to cover the annual operating expenses and keep the doors of the only Koala Hospital in the Northern Rivers open. Our costs are low because of the enormous contribution our more than 240 volunteers make, so your support goes further.
Your donation is tax-deductible in Australia and will go towards medicine, hospital equipment, veterinary staff, pathology testing, laboratory supplies and ground-breaking koala health research projects.
We care for more sick, injured and orphaned koalas than any other Koala Hospital in New South Wales, Queensland or Victoria. The Northern Rivers Koala Hospital treats over 350 koalas each year, and this number is ever-increasing. We are the only wildlife hospital in the region custom-built for and dedicated to koalas, with a Koala Care Centre and Research & Diagnostics Laboratory on-site.
We have proven that the Northern Rivers Koala Hospital is highly effective and vitally important in order to achieve our goal of saving koalas in our region. Since it's inception in 2019, our Koala Hospital has more than doubled the survival rate of rescued koalas admitted to our onsite Koala Care Centre. Friends of the Koala has successfully rehabilitated and released over 2000 koalas back into the wild.
Why a dedicated koala hospital?
The Koala Hospital is set up with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment tools including ultrasound, x-ray, blood and biological sample analysis machines, a blood bank, as well as anaesthetic, surgical, and pathology laboratory equipment to assist our expert veterinary team to provide specialised care to koalas.
We can rescue, transport, assess, test, diagnose, microchip, tag, collect samples for research, vaccinate against chlamydia, initiate treatment, or release koalas all within 24 hours of admission. For other veterinary hospitals, the turnaround would be much longer and many of these important procedures would not be possible.
We are the only wildlife hospital in NSW licensed to vaccinate all koalas against chlamydia upon their healthy release to the wild. Chlamydial disease is the number one cause of death for koalas in our region.
The Koala Hospital, together with the Koala Care Centre, offers 24/7 care lead by a professional veterinary team with extensive experience in treating koalas and over 100 care centre volunteers that assist every week by providing care, treatments, supplements and fresh leaf.
